C3IEL: Cluster for Cloud Evolution, Climate and Lightning
A group from ASRI won in January 2020 an ISA tender to build the optical payload for a joint French-Israeli Earth-observing mission C3IEL: Cluster for Cloud evolution, Climate and Lightning.
C3IEL - a bi-national project with leading scientists from various Israeli universities - is to provide, for the first time, new insights into cloud dynamics through simultaneous observations from a dozen or more angles.
Each satellite will have several cameras on board, specially geared towards imaging of the clouds and measuring their water vapor content and lightning activity.
ASRI along with its contractors, climate researchers in Israel and in France, and ISA executives are currently making rapid progress in the preliminary design of the CIEL payload.
